The migration of Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 (Windows 2003 SBS) to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 (Windows 2008 SBS) can be extremely difficult if not performed correctly. To make matters worse, if the migration fails you run the risk of damaging your Exchange Mailbox Store.
It is crucial that you backup all critical Exchange files before attempting the migration.
When you perform a migration from Microsoft 2003 Small Business Server to Microsoft 2008 Small Business Server it replicates all of your Active Directory information. For a period of time during the migration, you will have both Windows 2003 SBS and Windows 2008 SBS operating under the same domain. Both servers will provide DNS information for the clients and member servers on your local area network. One thing that the migration doesn't automatically do is migrate Exchange 2003 over to Exchange 2007. This step can only be done manually and requires someone knowledgeable in Exchange migration. Some Things to Consider When Performing the Exchange Migration
1) Your router will be pointing to the old server.
2) Exchange 2007 is not configured to send external email by default. You must configure send connectors within the hub transport configuration, which is found in the Exchange 2007 Administration Console.
3) If you want to receive email from users on the Exchange Server 2003 you must setup a connector to allow the two Exchange Servers to communicate with each other.
4) Once the migration is complete you must perform additional steps prior to removing the Exchange 2003 Server.
