How we did it: Bay Business Edge was called by a local Palm Harbor business that specializes in Government contracts. We recommended Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption for their Windows 2008 Server. When we deal with any business that does business with any government we recommend using Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption. This is a feature that is new with Windows 2008 Server that allows you to encrypt data on the hard drive in the event that the server is stolen. With Windows 2003 for example if your server hardware crashes or you need old data you can simply take the hard drive out and move it in to another server or computer and you have access to the old server hard drive. Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption prevents this for security reasons. This allows your data to remain secure in the event that your server is stolen or missing. That was Step 1 for our client.
Next we had to provide a solution to send out new software on the network and push to both servers and clients. For this client they had 80 workstations and 20 servers. We setup Windows Deployment Service which is shipped with Windows 2008 Server and allows you to deploy software to client machines on the Local Area Network. Our last stop was to setup security with network access protection. This forces clients to meet a set of requirements before it can connect to your 2008 server. Ex: If the client doesn't’t meet the requirements it can't connect and will be denied access.
