Upgraded Server with Raid Controller for Largo Business
How we did it: Windows Server Dell Poweredge 1400 with dual - SATA drives and no Raid protection. We added a PERC controller and two SCSI drives with a raid 1 setup. This hosted the operating system. Then we added a second server Poweredge 2950 with a cluster setup between the two boxes. This allowed for zero downtime between the two boxes. The boxes are both Windows servers that host exchange and file shares and an intranet service. The intranet website is visible from the public network and the internet network with a routed NAT from a Cisco 2611. This allowed for redundancy and increased the performance to the intranet.
Next we setup and NLB cluster solution and it managed both website's for both load and traffic load balancing management. NLB is a very popular cluster configuration solution that comes with Windows 2003 Server R2 and above. Both servers were upgraded to 2 Terabytes of RAM. This was the highest about of ram the server could hold since it's Windows Datacenter only supports a max of 2TB of RAM. NLB is not installed by default with server versions you must perform the install by going to administrative tools\add features and then install load balancing feature setup. Windows also comes with IIS 7.0 which has higher security and is faster/better than IIS 6.0. Troubleshooting with IIS 7.0 is a lot smoother and easy to manage from an administration standpoint. Windows server has Vitalization built-in with Hyper-V Virtualization. Applications can be virtualized with out any need for a VPN.
