Local Dentist Needed Their Server Upgraded
Primary goal was to upgrade their Dell Poweredge servers ram and hard drive space without losing any data or having to reinstall their software. Their server had proprietary software installed and the customer didn't have any of the disks. So when we are faced with a situation like this we have to use another method for performing the upgrades on their Dell Poweredge Server because in order to setup the Raid hard drive upgrade the operating system would need to be reinstalled along with all the programs. But fortunately we have a solution to get this upgrade accomplished and save the customer money in the process.
The first step to upgrading this dentist office network server was to create a virtual image backup of the server. Next we install the new hard drives and memory in to the Dell Poweredge Server. We setup a hardware Raid controller in Raid 5 configuration. At this point the server is blank so we start with installing Centos Linux with the minimum options so that the host operating system is a trimmed down version of Centos Linux. On top of that we run VMware server and then restore the image backup. This allows you to keep all your previous settings, files and configuration without the need to reinstall a single program and without the need to restore a single file. You server will perform better than it did and you won't lose any files, settings or configuration. The beauty of this new configuration is in the future when you are ready to retire your hardware you will not need to load a single driver and you won't lose any settings or files at that point either.
